Taiwan is generally referred as the land of convenience since you can find anything or do anything at just about any time of the day. Although locals work or study during the day, yet nighttime is for play. There are various types of venues to choose from. These range from usual westernized bars and clubs, cocktails in a trendy lounge bar, dancing in a club, or live music at one of the city’s venues to more unique places such as KTV bars (Karaoke bars). Taipei city is safe at night, so relax and enjoy yourself!

Ximending has been a famous area for shopping and entertainment since the 1930s. Historic structures include a concert hall and a historic cinema. Modern structures house karaoke businesses, art film cinemas, wide-release movie cinemas, electronic stores, and a wide variety of restaurants and fashion clothing stores. The pedestrian area is especially popular with teens. There is also KTV, giant karaoke venues where groups of people can reserve a small room equipped with karaoke equipment. The staff will deliver drinks and food to the room or you can bring your own foods with corkage fee. It’s a favorite pastime for Taiwanese and an opportunity to belt out songs with only your friends and family to ridicule you.

The best nightlife is found in the commercial district of Anho Rd in East Taipei and the older Shi Men Ding or West Side. Taiwanese tend to eat early and many restaurants close by 9:30 pm, but with no licensing limits many bars are open until 2 am or 4 am, and some all night. Shao yen or snack bars in night life areas are popular on the way home.

Taiwan might be very small compared to many other countries, there are many cities and each one has unique features and a way of life different to other cities in Taiwan. If you are thinking of coming to Taiwan to teach English, then knowing what each city has to offer can be useful in deciding where you should work. What city you live in and can directly affect your way of life. This includes how much you earn, how much you save, the kind of working environment you’ll find yourself in and the kind of food you’ll be eating. Not all cities in Taiwan are equal and some people might prefer one city over another.

The most popular city and the one with the most English teachers is Taipei. If you want to find the city with the most teachers and foreigners, head to Taipei. There are hundreds of not thousands of English schools and businesses all looking for English teachers and some kind of English course. Why is Taipei so popular? Taipei is the largest city in Taiwan and therefore there are many shops, services and goods that appeal to foreigners which aren’t found in other smaller cities in Taiwan.

Businesses locate their headquarters in or near Taipei. Most of the international traffic coming in and out of Taiwan is via Taipei. Taipei is basically the business hub of Taiwan. It is where all major businesses and companies do their business and along with that comes all the luxuries you typically find in any major city around the world. Taipei is also the most developed and has the best public transport system available anywhere in Taiwan. It was the first city to get a working subway system.

This is one of the reasons why many foreigners live in Taipei. It is the easiest to live in if you can’t speak any Chinese. However, this all comes at a price and Taipei is the most expensive city to live in.

Once you get outside of Taipei you’ll find that the cost of living drops but so does the way of life. Kaohsiung and Taichung are the second and third largest cities in Taiwan. However, their public transport and the city itself is vastly different from Taipei. They are slightly more “rural” with fewer of the luxuries you may find in Taipei. However, the cities are much better to live in and the quality of life is better. The English ability of most people living in these cities is basic to none. Does this mean you’ll have to learn some Chinese to survive? No, but just don’t expect the kind of English friendly life that you typically find in Taipei.

If you plan on teaching English in Taiwan make sure that you do some research on where you want to teach. There is much more to Taiwan than just Taipei, however, very few English teachers ever work outside of Taipei and never discover the “real” Taiwan. Living and teaching outside of Taipei gives you the chance to save more money and experience the real way of life in Taiwan.

As most people live in the western portion of Taiwan, that is where the greatest concentration of roads and railway systems are located. The underground is the most convenient type of transport. There are six lines of the underground in Taiwan. The price of a ticket is about 20-60 monetary units in the national currency. Taxi is available in all large cities. The journey price is 70Taiwan dollars for the first kilometer and five new Taiwan dollars for every 300 meters. On the whole, the taxi price in all main cities of Taiwan is set up by a municipal corporation. Consequently, the price can be different in this or that city. However, it is possible to set up a fixed price without the real meter record in long country trips.

There are all possible kinds of transport in Taiwan. However, there some recommendations that you should know before visiting Taiwan. There is an inland system of railroads which includes short railroad routes. These short routes are used by tourists to see more for a short period of time. As it can be very difficult to buy railroad tickets during a holiday,it is recommended to order tickets 14 days before a trip via phone or the Internet. Internal airlines are the other kind of transport that is very convenient to use. However, internal airlines are usually overcrowded on weekends and holidays.

Motor-cycles and bicycles are a very popular kind of transport in Taiwan. Bicycles are usually used within the campus. Many universities have special parking zones for motor-cycles and bicycles. If you are going to use a taxi you should know that additional 5 newTaiwan dollars are taken for every 2 minutes of stoppage and the general price of a trip increases at 20% after 11PM. Besides, additional 10 newTaiwan dollars are taken for a call and baggage placing. Summarizing, there are all possible kinds of transport in Taiwan. Consequently, you can choose any kind of transport that is convenient for you.
